Many European cities are well-equipped to deal with autonomous vehicles. Self-driving minibuses have already been tested in technical demonstrations in various European countries, among which four of the six FABULOS procuring partners. European cities can become exemplary cases to the world, but there currently is a lack of valid test cases: a proof-of-concept for the management of autonomous fleets as part of the public transportation provision is not yet available. This kind of intelligent transportation system and integrated transportation approach is key to facilitating the sustainable development of public transportation and for cities to be able to become car-free in the foreseeable future and foster the longer-term goal of sustainable and liveable cities. The outcome of FABULOS will provide a world-first commercially viable proof-of-concept, after the pre-commercial procurement process ends in December 2020.
